Defrost Cycle Problems

We repair heat pump defrost cycle problems for homeowners across Florida and Georgia, from a stuck defrost board to a failed sensor that leaves the outdoor coil iced over. You need this call when the outdoor unit is covered in frost or ice on a cool morning, when heating output drops off, or when the system runs a defrost cycle over and over and never clears. Turn the system to off at the thermostat so the ice can melt, then call us and we will come look at it.

What the job involves

A heat pump in heating mode pulls warmth out of outdoor air, so the coil runs colder than the air around it and picks up frost. The defrost cycle reverses that briefly and melts it off. When something in that sequence fails, the coil stays iced and the house stops getting heat. We arrive, let the ice clear, then watch the system move through a full cycle so we can see where the sequence breaks instead of guessing at parts.

What we check

We start with the defrost control board and the coil sensor or thermostat that tells the board how cold the coil is, since a drifting sensor is a common cause of short or endless cycles. We check the reversing valve and its solenoid, the outdoor fan and its relay, and refrigerant charge behaviour under load. We also look at airflow: a clogged filter, blocked return or debris packed around the outdoor unit will push a coil toward freezing no matter how good the board is.

How we decide it is the right call

Ice on the coil is a symptom, not a diagnosis, so we confirm the defrost system is actually the fault before quoting a repair. If the sensor reads accurately, the board initiates and terminates on time, and the reversing valve shifts, the frost is coming from something else and we chase that instead. Sometimes the answer is a sensor. Sometimes it is a fan motor or a charge issue. We tell you which, in plain terms, and what we would replace.

Defrost Cycle Problems — quick answers

Is some frost on my outdoor unit normal in winter?

A light coat of frost during cold, damp weather is normal and should clear on its own within a cycle. Thick ice covering the coil, or frost that stays for hours, means the defrost cycle is not finishing.

Should I chip the ice off myself?

No. Prying at the coil bends fins and can puncture refrigerant tubing. Switch the system off at the thermostat so the ice melts on its own, then call us for the heating repair.

Why does my heat pump keep going into defrost every few minutes?

Repeated short defrost cycles usually point to a coil sensor reading wrong or a control board terminating early. Low airflow can also trigger it. We watch a full cycle to confirm which before replacing anything.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill out the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, short cycling, a clicking outdoor unit, water on the floor. Details help us load the right parts before we drive out.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical side, refrigerant behavior, and the coil. Coils foul fast in coastal air, so we look there early. You get the finding in plain language before work starts.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and verify

We make the repair, then run the system and watch it. Supply temperature, drain flow, amp draw, and how the house actually feels. If the fix needs a follow-up part, we tell you that day.

Why homeowners call us

  • Humidity gets equal weightCold air alone is not comfort. On slab homes and older condos, a system can hit temperature and still leave the rooms clammy. We look at run time, airflow, and drainage so the house dries out instead of just chilling.
  • Coastal wear is expectedSalt air chews condenser fins and contactors. We check for corrosion, weak capacitors, and fouled coils as part of the diagnosis, because in this region those are causes rather than afterthoughts.
  • Heat gets attention tooFurnace repair, heat pump reversing valve trouble, and heat strip failures all come through in the cooler months. Georgia homes lean on heat harder than Florida homes, and we service both ends of the region.
  • No mystery invoicesYou hear what failed, what it takes to fix, and what we found nearby that may fail next. If a repair does not make sense on an old system, we say so instead of stacking parts on it.
  • All major brands, gas & electricCarrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York and more, as an independent company.
  • Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
