A dual-fuel repair is mostly a controls and staging problem. Two heating sources have to share one thermostat, one outdoor sensor and one set of relays, and the handoff has to happen at the right outdoor temperature. We trace the wiring between the thermostat, the heat pump control board and the furnace board, then watch the system stage through a call for heat. Sometimes the fault is a failed outdoor sensor. Sometimes it is a thermostat that was replaced with one that cannot run dual-fuel logic at all.
What We Check On The Visit
We start with the thermostat configuration and confirm it is set up for dual-fuel rather than heat pump with electric backup. Then we read the outdoor sensor, check the balance point setting and verify the furnace and heat pump are not being called at the same time. We inspect the reversing valve operation, defrost board, blower speeds and the low voltage connections at both units.
