If You Smell Gas, Smoke or Burning Plastic: Do This First
Leave the building before you do anything else. 1. Get everyone outside, including pets, and stay out. 2. Do not flip switches, unplug anything or use a lighter. 3. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line. 4. Once the fire department or the utility says the house is safe, call us and we will come look at the heating system. A smell of rotten eggs or sulphur means gas. Melting plastic, hot wiring or visible smoke means electrical. Both of those are life safety calls first and a repair call second. Dust burning off smells dry and dusty, and it fades within an hour of runtime.you can stay put for that one.
The Dust Smell That Is Actually Normal
The first heating cycle of the season usually smells like scorched dust, and it is normal across Florida and Georgia where systems sit idle for months. Dust settles on the heat exchanger or the electric heat strips over the summer, then burns off when they finally get hot. That smell should be faint, dry and gone in fifteen to sixty minutes of running. If it is still there the next day, or it gets stronger instead of weaker, stop guessing and call for heating repair. A safe check you can do first: change the filter. A loaded filter starves airflow, and starved airflow makes everything downstream run hotter than it should.
What Not to Do While You Wait
Do not open the furnace or air handler cabinet. Do not reset a breaker over and over to see if it holds, and do not tape a limit switch or pull a wire to make a noise stop. Do not spray anything into a vent to cover the smell. Refrigerant lines, gas connections and high voltage inside the cabinet are not homeowner territory, and a burning smell often means one of those three is already stressed. What you can safely do: check the thermostat is set where you expect, confirm the supply vents are open, clear leaves and mulch back from the outdoor unit, and swap the filter. Then leave the system off.
What We Find Causing It
Most burning smells we trace to one of four things. A failing blower motor or a slipping belt-driven wheel running hot. Electric heat strips with a cracked insulator or a loose lug arcing at the connection. A dirty evaporator coil choking airflow so the whole cabinet overheats, which happens fast on coastal homes where salt air and dust foul coils quicker than inland. Or a gas furnace with a cracked heat exchanger or a burner burning dirty. On slab homes and older condos we also find ductwork resting against something hot in a tight closet. We test amp draw, check temperature rise and inspect the exchanger before we quote any work.
When to Call Us and What Happens Next
Call us for air conditioning repair or heater repair if the smell lasts past the first hour, returns on later cycles, or comes with tripped breakers, a burning-plastic edge or the system shutting itself off. We work homes across Florida and Georgia, and we will ask what the smell is like, how long the system ran and whether anything tripped, so have that ready. Shut the system off at the thermostat until we arrive if the smell is anything other than faint dust. Going a night without heat or cooling is inconvenient. Running a unit that is cooking its own wiring costs a lot more.
That Burning Smell When the Heat Starts — straight answers
How long should a dusty burning smell last when I first turn on the heat?
Fifteen to sixty minutes of runtime, and it should get weaker the whole time. If it is still noticeable on the second or third cycle, or it strengthens, turn the system off and call us for heating repair.
My vents smell like burning plastic. Is that ever normal?
No. Burning plastic points to overheating wiring, a failing blower motor or something touching a hot surface. Shut the system off at the thermostat, and if you see smoke or the smell is strong, leave the building and call 911 first.
Can a dirty filter cause a burning smell?
Yes, indirectly. A clogged filter cuts airflow, so heat strips and heat exchangers run hotter than designed. Change the filter, and if the smell continues after that, the cause is deeper and needs air conditioner repair or a heating inspection.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill out the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, short cycling, a clicking outdoor unit, water on the floor. Details help us load the right parts before we drive out.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, electrical side, refrigerant behavior, and the coil. Coils foul fast in coastal air, so we look there early. You get the finding in plain language before work starts.
- Step 3
Repair and verify
We make the repair, then run the system and watch it. Supply temperature, drain flow, amp draw, and how the house actually feels. If the fix needs a follow-up part, we tell you that day.

Why homeowners call us
- Humidity gets equal weightCold air alone is not comfort. On slab homes and older condos, a system can hit temperature and still leave the rooms clammy. We look at run time, airflow, and drainage so the house dries out instead of just chilling.
- Coastal wear is expectedSalt air chews condenser fins and contactors. We check for corrosion, weak capacitors, and fouled coils as part of the diagnosis, because in this region those are causes rather than afterthoughts.
- Heat gets attention tooFurnace repair, heat pump reversing valve trouble, and heat strip failures all come through in the cooler months. Georgia homes lean on heat harder than Florida homes, and we service both ends of the region.
- No mystery invoicesYou hear what failed, what it takes to fix, and what we found nearby that may fail next. If a repair does not make sense on an old system, we say so instead of stacking parts on it.
- All major brands, gas & electricCarrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York and more, as an independent company.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
