What Ice on the Coil Actually Means
A frozen evaporator coil means the coil got colder than it should have, and moisture in the air froze onto it instead of draining away. That happens for one of two reasons: not enough warm air moving across the coil, or not enough refrigerant in the system to absorb heat properly. Either way, once ice forms it blocks airflow further, so the freeze accelerates. You lose cooling, the blower keeps running, and meltwater can overflow the drain pan into drywall or a ceiling. Turn the cooling off at the thermostat and leave the fan on. That thaws the ice without adding more.
Cause One: Airflow, and It Is Usually the Filter
The cheapest cause is restricted airflow, and the filter is the first suspect. Near the coast, filters load up fast with salt haze, pollen and construction dust, and a clogged filter starves the coil. Closed or blocked supply vents do the same thing, as does furniture pushed against a return grille. Collapsed or crushed flex duct in an attic is a common one in older slab homes and condos where somebody stepped on a run. Dirty blower wheels matter too. A wheel packed with grime moves a fraction of its rated air even though the motor sounds fine.
Cause Two: A Dirty Coil Nobody Can See
The coil itself fouls. Fine dust and biological growth build up between the fins, and once that mat is thick enough, air stops passing through even with a brand new filter installed. Humidity in this region makes it worse, because a damp coil holds everything that lands on it. You will often see it as a system that cools acceptably in spring and freezes every August. Coil cleaning is not a spray-and-walk job on a loaded coil. It usually means pulling access panels, protecting the drain pan and blower, and rinsing the coil properly so the debris leaves rather than packing deeper.
Cause Three: Low Refrigerant, Which Means a Leak
If airflow checks out, the system is likely low on refrigerant. Low charge drops the pressure in the coil, the coil temperature falls below freezing, and ice forms, often starting at one corner or at the suction line. Refrigerant is not consumed, so low charge means a leak somewhere in the coil, the line set, or the outdoor unit. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak just buys a season. This is not homeowner work and there are no safe DIY steps here. Refrigerant is under pressure and the equipment involves high voltage. Call for air conditioning repair and let a technician handle it.
What You Can Safely Check, and What We Do Differently
Safe checks: replace the filter, confirm the thermostat is set to cool with a reasonable setpoint and has fresh batteries, look for a tripped breaker, open every supply vent and clear the return, and pull leaves or grass clippings away from the outdoor unit. Then let the system thaw fully with the fan running before restarting cooling. On our side, a technician measures static pressure and airflow, checks superheat and subcooling to see whether the charge is right, inspects the coil and blower wheel, and leak-searches when the numbers say low. That tells us whether this is an AC repair or a airflow correction, instead of guessing.

Can I chip the ice off to get cooling back faster?
No. Coil fins and the tubing behind them puncture easily, and a punctured coil turns a service call into a replacement. Shut cooling off, run the fan only, and let it melt on its own.
How long does a frozen coil take to thaw?
With the fan running and cooling off, usually one to three hours depending on how much ice built up. If it froze solid over a couple of days, give it longer and keep towels near the air handler.
It thawed and now it cools fine. Do I still need someone out?
Yes. Thawing removes the ice, not the cause. A system that froze once will freeze again, and if the reason is low refrigerant, the leak is still there and the compressor is taking the strain.
